“Why Columbia?” Supplemental College Essay

I can still remember when I saw the rings of Saturn. I was seven years old at the time and when I close my eyes I can still recreate the image in my mind. What struck me when I saw Saturn was the beauty of the planet contrasted with the empty darkness of space around it.

This experience took place at Columbia University. We used a high powered telescope as a part of a science event for the public. Growing up in New York City, Columbia University has always been a part of my life.

As a child and teenager I experienced numerous programs and events at Columbia University. Whether it's going to a Columbia basketball game with my father and having dinner at V&T afterward, browsing the Columbia bookstore, visiting the Campus or taking the “1 Train” to see a Columbia football game at Baker Field, Columbia has always been a part of my life.

Now as a high school student, I get to see Columbia through the lens of a college applicant. I want to be an economics major and there is no better place than Columbia University to do this. The faculty is world renowned and the department is ranked as one of the best in the world. In addition, the core curriculum brings undergraduate students together around common studies and will provide me a strong liberal arts education.

Columbia cannot be matched as a place to go to school. I have had my own Columbia experiences that prove this to be true. I can already see myself feeling at home and a part of the Columbia community.
